Summer Is Right Around The Corner!

Happy summer!

Finally, long sunny days and warm nights are back. It’s time to break out the grill, fire pit, yard games and invite family and friends over for some fun! While it’s important to take time out to relax and enjoy all that the summertime has to offer, it is equally important to take the time to focus on health and wellness. The month of June spotlights men’s health, along with other important health topics noted below:

  • Men’s Health Month
  • Fireworks Safety Month
  • Home Safety Month
  • Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Month
  • National Aphasia Awareness Month
  • National Scleroderma Awareness Month
  • National Scoliosis Awareness Month
  • Vision Research Month

There’s a lot of information out there on men’s health, and listed below are some quick facts that I came across. For more information, check out www.menshealthmonth.org

  • On May 31, 1994, President Bill Clinton signed a bill establishing National Men’s Health Week
  • Women are 100% more likely than men to have exams and preventive services
  • 1 in 2 men are diagnosed with cancer
  • In 2010, there were roughly 89 men for every 100 women in the 65-69 age group

Remember, small steady changes overtime can have a huge impact on your wellbeing. There are three areas that men can focus on to better their health:

  1. Eat well (watch portions and eat fruits and veggies)
  2. Be physically active (do yard work, play with your children, walk, etc.)
  3. Prioritize preventive health (attend regular checkups, screenings and exams)
