Be Grateful For Hair

Those who know me might be tempted to assume that the title of this piece is a snarky, jealous response to those who may not be “follicly” challenged. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Like many organizations, this month, the men of OneDigital are participating in our annual No-Shave November challenge. As noted on the official No-Shave November website:

"The goal of No-Shave November is to grow awareness by embracing our hair, which many cancer patients lose, and letting it grow wild and free. Donate the money you typically spend on shaving and grooming to educate about cancer prevention, save lives, and aid those fighting the battle."

Between our Connecticut and Massachusetts offices, we have 16 hearty souls who have taken on the challenge. In addition to the normal fund raising that takes place, this year we have added an element that encourages all “non-growers” to participate in the month-long activity by betting on the best beard in four categories. “Beard betting” allows a non-grower to contribute $4 and vote for one candidate to win each of the following categories: Best Beard; Most Metro; Duck Dynasty; “What is that?” There are prizes awarded along the way, and each “beard better” can change their vote as they evaluate the progress of all candidates’ growth (or lack thereof).

In addition to raising money, No -Shave November is a culturally compassionate event. Our CEO, Adam Bruckman, does an admirable job promoting cultural health. One supportive method being used this year, is the launch of our “BE” campaign. The purpose of the campaign is to keep culture as a guiding light for our organization. The monthly “BE” themes represent the ideals and ideas that we believe best portray our company. Although this month’s “Be Grateful” theme happens to be nicely connected to Thanksgiving, it also ties into our No-Shave November challenge.

Despite the usual silliness and trash talking that accompanies this annual event, unfortunately, all of us at some point in time will be touched directly or indirectly by cancer. During this time of year, it is important that we Be Grateful for:

• Our colleagues who are passionate stewards of our community efforts
• Those we may have lost but will never forget
• Those who need our help and support

And last, but not least, for those self-absorbed people who can grow hair on both sides of their heads.
