CMS Announces More Secure Medicare Cards

CMS Administrator, Seema Verma, announced that new Medicare cards are coming soon. All Medicare beneficiaries will receive new Medicare cards without Social Security numbers. Verma noted that this change is “to prevent fraud, fight identity theft, and keep taxpayer dollars safe, and to help ensure that we always put the needs of patients first.”

The new cards will have a unique, randomly-assigned Medicare number that consists of a combination of eleven numbers and uppercase letters. Each beneficiary’s new randomly assigned number has no connection to any other personal identifying information and will replace the Social Security number. CMS will begin mailing the new cards in April 2018 to replace all cards by April 2019.
