Joe DeBello Managing Consultant with OneDigital Retirement + Wealth Was Highlighted in Pension & Investments

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, consumer prices have increased 9.1% since June 2022. The largest such increase in 40 years.

As inflation starts to take over the conversation from a market perspective, employers are looking for resources to help navigate the current market. The Pension & Investment article, “Inflation spurs DC plan advisers to drill down on investment menus,” discusses whether employers are providing their employees with the right retirement investments amid inflation. It includes Joe’s insight around how OneDigital is talking and fielding questions about inflation and rising-rate-sensitive funds.

Investment menus that were built "pre-COVID, pre-bear market and pre-rising rates," were built to have diversification options that have given participants "places to go" to protect themselves with funds like stable value, fixed-income options and a mix of passive and active investments. As long as you're diversified, you're not going to necessarily feel the full brunt of what's happening to the market today.

The second article entitled, “Shareholder advocacy group is urging companies to align 401(k) plans with climate goals,” explains how shareholder advocacy group “As You Sow” is calling on some of the nation's largest companies to make sure their 401(k) retirement plans are in sync with what they're doing to fight climate change. It mentions how Joe takes issue with the idea of swapping out low-cost index funds with higher-fee ESG fund options; a move that he says will raise costs for plan participants by 70 to 80 basis points.

I take issue with the idea of swapping out low-cost index funds with higher-fee ESG fund options, a move that will raise costs for plan participants by 70 to 80 basis points. It seems to fly in the face of everything that's been decided by the courts in terms of prudent processes and governance. It flies in the face of all the relentless pressure on plan fees.
