Movers and Shakers: Annette Bechtold Featured in NAHU Publication

Annette Bechtold, SVP Regulatory Affairs and Reform Initiatives, was highlighted in the Movers and Shakers feature of this month's official publication of the National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU), America's Benefit Specialist. The profile focused on all that is happening in healthcare reform, making Annette a perfect fit as the first-ever Movers and Shakers piece the publication has conducted.

Sneak-peek of Annette's profile Q&A:

You've been in the industry for over 30 years in a variety of different roles. What have those roles taught you about our health insurance system?

That no matter what my role is and where the industry takes us, people need help navigating this dynamic and complex system. My current perspective and passion is born from the lessons of past years. From my first encounter as a claims representative helping someone pay for necessary treatment to fighting for treatment of last resort for a terminal cancer patient with no other options, I know how important our work is. Healthcare and insurance needs and demands are not a one-size fits all. Change is inevitable as our health insurance system grows and adapts to fit the needs of the population. As agents and brokers, we must not merely keep pace with it; we must stay out in front of it.

A dedication to learning and mastering this ever-changing system, along with all the entities and areas it touches, is the only way to ensure that we can serve our clients now and in the future. There's no such thing as knowing too much. The laws and regulations are so intertwined with other areas that understanding benefit plans and contracts alone isn't enough. Coupling our growing knowledge with each client's unique wants and needs is the only way to truly help them weather their financial healthcare obligations.

Let's face it: The only thing that is static is our clients' need for expert, trusted advice. Success with our clients and the industry is the result of intentional action, not casual association. My roles in operations, sales and now regulatory and compliance provide more opportunities to not only help clients but to support and assist those in all areas of service. I look at each new development, or potential development, from all experiences: claims, client service, sales, operations and compliance. Through these overlapping disciplines, I am better able to develop and communicate broader ideas and solutions for all stakeholders.
