No Joke! April Is National Humor Month

Back in 1976, humorist Larry Wilde founded “National Humor Month.” According to the official website, the celebration is “designed to heighten public awareness on how the joy and therapeutic value of laughter can improve health, boost morale, increase communication skills and enrich the quality of one’s life.”

The month holds a number of opportunities to celebrate and share your sense of humor. April Fool’s Day (April 1) was followed by “International Fun At Work Day” (April 5th.) Had I known about that day earlier, I would have brought in my soap bubbles and instigated a morning bubble blowing break.

My work based bubble blowing may have to wait until next year, but I may just pull out the old bubble wand later this week in honor of the next National Humor Month special day. Not only is April 13th Thomas Jefferson’s birthday, it has also been fittingly deemed “Pursuit of Happiness Day”.

In my world, happiness is a component of wellness. While there may not be much empirical evidence to back up the notion that “laughter is the best medicine” I doubt that many people will disagree.  So have yourself joyful, humorous April, and get out there and pursue some happiness! Thomas Jefferson would want you to!
