Effective March 19, 2017, Senate Bill 199 will now limit an employer’s ability to control the presence of guns at the worksite. Specifically, the Bill allows licensed gun owners to keep firearms in their own vehicles while parked on private employer property. It also allows licensed owners to bring concealed handguns into airport, institutes of higher education, and some government buildings under certain, specific conditions.
Previously, private employers had the ability to prohibit the presence of any firearms on the employer’s premises or properties, including inside employees’ personal motor vehicles. The bill now states that guns can be transported or stored on company property when (1) the firearm and all of its ammunition are kept in the individual’s privately owned vehicle when the owner is present in said vehicle, or if kept locked in the trunk or other enclosed compartment if the owner is absent; and (2) the vehicle is kept in a location where it is otherwise permitted to be (e.g., a parking lot or garage).
