Help Your Employees Discover the Hidden Gems in Their Benefits Package

During open enrollment, meetings are largely focused on changes to your organization’s health plan and enrollment instructions, leaving little time for communicating value-added benefits.

Not to mention, the challenge in explaining any potential increase in premiums employees may be facing. Because of this, sometimes the value-added benefits employees already have, become overlooked and unused.

Not sure what I mean? The following are several "hidden gems" that might be concealed in the plans you already offer.

Telemedicine/Nurse Lines

Who hasn’t turned to the internet to self-diagnose their symptoms with some unsettling illness only to find out that is not actually what is going on at all? Most group health insurance plans have a built-in complimentary Nurse Line available that you can call 24/7/365 and receive a more reliable answer than if you were to research online.

If it turns out you do need to be seen by a doctor – most health plans offer the option to seek care through Telemedicine.

You can see a board certified doctor within hours, most of the time minutes, from the comfort of your home (or office!) through your computer, tablet or phone. Not only is this convenient but it’s a lot less expensive alternative to the emergency room or an urgent care facility.

Of course, this service should never replace visits to your general doctor and specialists.

Special Offers and Discounts

There is a good chance your health insurance plan offers special discounts on products or services that aim to keep employees active and healthy. For example, you can find discounted offers for gym memberships and even certain weight loss programs like Jenny Craig®, Weight Watchers®, or Lindora®. Most of the major health insurers also offer discounts on fitness equipment and activity trackers like Garmin’s and FitBit products too.

You may also find discounts on humidifiers, dehumidifiers and other devices to help those coping with allergies, hearing aids, health and ancestry services, LASIK surgery and sometimes even pet insurance.

Value-Added Benefits

Did you know most life insurance or disability products come with extra complimentary benefits within the plans? These added programs can include a mini Employee Assistance Program (EAP), legal services (will prep, etc.), and financial planning services. Some plans even include worldwide travel assistance that can help with transportation and prescription replacement when traveling away from home.

Wellness Benefits

Don’t forget about wellness benefits! So many employees enrolled in accident and critical illness plans don’t file for their wellness benefit. This can range from $50-$150 per enrolled person per year depending on the plan. In some cases, the money from filing these claims pays the years’ worth of premium for the coverage. This is free money and much of it is left on the table each year.

The bottom line is that open enrollment can be a hectic time of year where we share an abundance of information with employees, but it is critical that employees understand the full value of their benefits package.

You can highlight these types of benefits in communications throughout the year to make sure employees are thoroughly educated on everything available to them.
