Combatting Misunderstanding of Diversity, Equity Programs Amid Political Divisiveness

Experts warn of the consequences of dismantling DEI programs as companies respond to shifting public sentiment.

"Never in 110 years could I have imagined it would be this heavy." These words from Kristen Eskew, VP of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging at OneDigital, reflect the surprising intensity of political backlash surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

In a panel discussion hosted by WIPN, an organization committed to empowering women in finance, called “DEI: More Than a Buzzword,” she noted the stark shifts in corporate America's stance on DEI programs. Many companies, previously committed to these initiatives, are now not only pausing but dismantling DEI programs, a trend Eskew views as a direct response to the increasingly charged political climate and significant events such as the rollback of affirmative action.

Several other speakers like Jennifer Rutley founder of and principal of Hidden Insights Group, and Laura Stamps, head of DEI strategies and engagement at Financial Finesse, echoed Eskew’s concerns, expressing concern about the long-term viability of DEI programs if companies remain susceptible to political swings. The panel also explored strategies for navigating this divisive terrain.

OneDigital remains committed to fostering a workplace culture where diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are core values. We maintain these standards through measured data-driven approaches and fierce advocacy for employees and clients.

Despite the external political shifts, leaders like Eskew emphasize that now, more than ever, strong leadership and data-driven strategies are crucial for sustaining these initiatives and ensuring that DEI remains more than just a buzzword.

If one thing is clear, it’s that leadership must remain committed to sustaining these initiatives. It’s never been more important time for fact-based discussions to combat resistance rooted in a lack of understanding.
