Tom Sutter
About
Tom Sutter is a Principal on OneDigital's Commercial Insurance team, serving clients throughout the Central Region from his base in Geneva, Illinois. With a career spanning more than 35 years, Tom brings a rare combination of technical expertise, business intuition, and genuine commitment to the people and organizations he serves.
Tom specializes in building complete risk management and commercial insurance programs for businesses of all sizes, with deep experience across property, general liability, workers' compensation, cyber, commercial auto, and umbrella coverage. He approaches every client engagement the same way: treating their business like it's his own - identifying what's broken, explaining how to fix it, and fighting for the best possible outcome. His philosophy is rooted in transparency and accountability. No fluff, no shortcuts, just honest, experience-backed counsel.
Before joining OneDigital in September 2023, Tom spent nearly a decade as a Partner and Vice President of Sales & Business Development at Crum-Halsted Agency (now a OneDigital company), where he helped drive the firm's growth and earned a reputation as a trusted commercial insurance advisor across the Illinois market. Prior to that, he served as Vice President of Business Development at DS&P Insurance Services for nearly 15 years, and as Executive Vice President of Operations at The American Insurance Agency. His career in the industry began in 1990, giving him decades of hands-on experience navigating complex risk environments for businesses ranging from small and mid-market to large enterprises.
Tom holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics with minors in Computer Science and Finance from Northern Illinois University. He is a published author, his first work was released in October 2014, and an active motivational and inspirational speaker, drawing on principles from Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich to inspire clients, colleagues, and audiences alike.
Beyond his professional work, Tom's life was profoundly shaped by the loss of his son Cal to leukemia at the age of 13 in 2006. Rather than stepping back, Tom channeled that grief into purpose, co-founding Cal's Angels in 2007, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that has raised over $35 million, granted wishes for thousands of children fighting cancer, and established a lasting presence at Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago through a $4 million commitment to fund the Cal’s Angels Advanced Leukemia Clinical & Research Program. Cal's Angels maintains a 88-cents-on-the-dollar giving ratio and has become one of the most respected pediatric cancer organizations in Illinois.
Tom was also recently honored as a Significant Sig by the Sigma Chi Fraternity, a distinction awarded to fewer than 1% of the fraternity's total alumni, recognizing his high-level professional achievement and lasting positive impact.
